Plot

In the aftermath of World War II, Marion Scott, a decorated soldier with an honorable discharge, embarks on a journey to the quaint hometown of his fallen comrade, intending to make this charming hamlet his own sanctuary. His journey takes an unexpected turn when he crosses paths with Wilhelmina Hammond, a wealthy society belle fleeing from her rigid fiancée, Alvin Bailey, in a stolen car. Their heated bickering over a car mishap and a depleted gas tank ends with their arrest by local law enforcement on suspicion of auto theft. Wilhelmina, a feisty heiress chafing against the constraints of her privileged life, manages to establish her identity and secure their release. Intrigued by the enigmatic Marion, she fabricates a tale of being a secretary to the Hammond family. They find themselves back in police custody after an ill-fated attempt to enter the Hammond estate without keys, drawing the attention of the media who sensationalize the story of a runaway heiress and a mysterious stranger. In defiance of the Hammond's caretaker Wiggins and the societal norms, Wilhelmina audaciously hires Marion as her chauffeur. This causes an uproar within the Hammond household as her indignant mother, scorned fiancée, and various other members of their entourage, including the sympathetic Aunt Harriet, the mischievous Patricia, the family dressmaker Camille, and Alvin's fitness instructor Champ, rush home from New York. A simmering battle of wills ensues as Mrs. Hammond and Alvin are bent on dismantling a romance that, ironically, doesn't exist, given Marion and Wilhelmina's constant squabbling. Amidst this chaos, the enigma surrounding the stranger Marion unravels, drawing the small town and its leading family into a whirlwind of revelations and unexpected alliances. This narrative of love, friendship, and societal pressures will keep you captivated as it skillfully intertwines comedy, romance, and mystery against the backdrop of post-war America.
