On the precipice of forty, Conrad Valmont, a man of leisure and heir to the opulent Valmont Hotel fortune, finds himself abruptly severed from his wealth as a result of his parents' sudden divorce. Living a life of idleness in the heart of Manhattan, Conrad is known for his perpetual work-in-progress - the quintessential New York novel - although it never seems to progress beyond the stage of information gathering. Raised in a world of luxury, Conrad's life, steeped in old-world grandeur, has been devoid of any significant romantic attachments. His only ally in this world of extravagance is the self-made artist, Dylan Tate. Unlike Conrad, Dylan is a passionate believer in love, having been in a serious relationship with Jocelyn for three years. However, when Conrad's life takes an unexpected turn, thrusting him onto the unforgiving streets of the Upper West Side, it's Dylan who offers him sanctuary. As Conrad embarks on his week-long journey of self-discovery, his life becomes entangled with the enchanting Beatrice Fairbanks, a model with a passion for music. The twist? Beatrice is also the object of Dylan's affections. Conrad, smitten for the first time in his life, begins a clandestine love affair with Beatrice, breaking his promise to Dylan and risking their friendship. At the same time, he is forced to maintain a facade of wealth while sinking deep into debt. Conrad's life, once a picture of opulence, is now rife with deception and financial instability. As he navigates the treacherous waters of love and friendship, he must also grapple with his newfound poverty, a secret he desperately tries to keep hidden.
