The Legacy of the Bones (2019)

In the heart of Pamplona, Spain, a year after the chilling Basajaun crimes, a heavily pregnant Inspector Amaia Salazar finds herself on the precipice of a harrowing trial. The accused, Jason Medina, stands charged with the grotesque violation and murder of her stepdaughter, Johana Márquez. However, before justice can be served, Medina takes his own life, leaving behind a cryptic note bearing a single word: "Tarttalo." The shock triggers Amaia's labor, and she gives birth to her son Ibai, a beacon of joy for her and her artist husband, James Westford. Four months later, Amaia returns to active duty, summoned to solve two unsettling cases. The desecration of a small church featuring a severed baby's arm on the altar, and a suicide note from a man imprisoned for his wife's murder, revealing the location of her body and eerily echoing the word - "Tarttalo." Unraveling these mysteries takes Amaia back to her hometown of Elizondo, where she's embraced by her tarot-reading Aunt Engrasi and her sisters, Flora and Rosaura. A shocking pattern emerges as Amaia discovers that the two murdered women were deprived of their right arms post-mortem, mirroring the church desecration. Each arm bears the same gruesome signature, leading Amaia to unearth a connection with the Agotes, a tribe persecuted in the Middle Ages for their pagan practices, and the ancient myth of Tarttalo, a giant devouring Christians. As the case spirals, Amaia seeks guidance from her former FBI mentor, Aloisius Dupree, while her Aunt Engrasi uses tarot to forecast the looming dangers. The strain of the investigation strains her relationship with James, even as he moves to Elizondo to support his wife and child. The case takes an unexpected turn when Amaia discovers the amputated baby's arm belongs to a twin sister she never knew existed. Moreover, her mother Rosario, long confined in a mental hospital for trying to kill Amaia as a child, slays a nurse, leaving "Tarttalo" scrawled in blood beneath the bed. Drawn into a whirlpool of her family's dark past, Amaia discovers the ties between her mother and a sinister cult dedicated to pagan rituals involving human sacrifice. She realizes the crimes are not random but entwined intimately with her own life. As an impending flood threatens Elizondo, Amaia must unmask the killer and unravel the enigma of Tarttalo before those she holds dear become the next victims.
