Plot

In the twilight of 1910, celebrated Russian author Leo Tolstoy (Christopher Plummer) finds himself immersed in a life far removed from his literary roots. He is the leader of the Tolstoyan Movement, a group advocating for brotherly love, world peace through pacifism, and the renunciation of material wealth and physical love. His chief disciple, Vladimir Chertkov (Paul Giamatti), is a fervent supporter of the cause, going to great lengths to champion its principles. As part of his commitment, Chertkov recruits a young man, Valentin Bulgakov (James McAvoy), to serve as Tolstoy's personal secretary. Thrust into the heart of the estate where the movement's work unfolds, Bulgakov soon discovers the complex dynamics of this world, where each member interprets and embraces the teachings to their liking. A key contention arises around the fate of Tolstoy's literary legacy. The movement aims to bequeath all of Tolstoy's writings to the people, allowing them to enter the public domain after his death. However, Tolstoy's wife, the Countess Sofya Andreevna Tolstoy (Dame Helen Mirren), vehemently disagrees. She views her husband's works as their rightful inheritance, believing they are entitled to the financial benefits they would yield. Caught amidst this turbulent conflict is Bulgakov, who navigates the tension between the Countess, the intransigent Chertkov, and the Tolstoys' daughter Sasha (Anne-Marie Duff). All the while, the Countess, suspecting Bulgakov's influence on her husband's new will, deploys all her seductive wiles to sway the young devotee. Set against a backdrop of revolution and intrigue, 'The Last Station' is a captivating exploration of the clash between personal desires and ideological commitments, a testament to the enduring power of love, art, and belief.
