Plot

In the daring and thought-provoking film, The Last Laugh, the boundaries of humor and taboo are provocatively probed. The film boldly poses the question: "Is it permissible to find humor in the Holocaust?" Through a series of clips from films, performances, and insightful interviews, the film explores the intersection of comedy and tragedy. With an incredible line-up of legends, critical thinkers, top comedians, and prominent Jewish leaders such as Mel Brooks, Sarah Silverman, Gilbert Gottfried, Joan Rivers, Louis C.K., Chris Rock, Abraham Foxman, and Shalom Auslander, the film delves into the depths of societal norms and the freedom of speech. The Last Laugh is a brave exploration of what is considered off-limits in a society that values freedom of expression, extending its exploration beyond the Holocaust to other sensitive topics like 9/11, AIDS, and racism. Having been screened at over 100 festivals, including Tribeca, HotDocs, Traverse City, BFI London, Rome, and IDFA, and Certified Fresh at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes, this outrageously funny yet deeply profound film was released theatrically in March 2017. The film was subsequently broadcast in April 2017 (Independent Lens/PBS) where it was a runner-up for that season's Audience Award. The Last Laugh invites viewers into a spirited debate, challenging preconceived notions, and offering fresh perspectives on the delicate balance between humor and respect.
