Plot

As the sun rises on the first day of Rosh Hashana, a tightly woven family gathers in a tranquil park to recite their prayers. In the heart of this familial tapestry are two young souls, Josh and Olivia, standing on the precipice of matrimony. Josh, a Modern Orthodox Jew, is deeply rooted in his faith while Olivia, once a Catholic, has lovingly embraced Judaism as her own. Harry, Josh's father, brings a touch of cynicism to the religious scene with his agnostic beliefs, while Claire, the family's beloved great-grandmother, maintains a profound yet mostly silent presence. Post-nuptials, a beach day outing becomes the backdrop for a life-altering revelation. Claire, who has always been a quiet reservoir of affection, takes Josh and Olivia on an unexpected journey into her past, guided by a collection of photos securely tucked away in a safe deposit box. A peculiar location for memories, but Claire's past is far from ordinary. The woman they've known as their Jewish matriarch is not only a non-Jew, but a former Nazi Party member during the terrifying era of World War II Germany. Despite her anti-Semitic history, Claire paradoxically professes her love for her Jewish descendants. Her confession is further complicated by a terminal brain cancer diagnosis, leading her to contemplate leaving her New York home for an assisted suicide. This shocking revelation incites a whirlpool of emotions within her family, as they grapple with their newfound understanding of their beloved matriarch. Some family members argue for a different resolution, urging Claire to atone for her past lies. As the story unfolds, the family is forced to confront their own beliefs and question the ties that bind them.
