The King of Marvin Gardens (1972)

David Staebler, a late-night radio host based in Philadelphia, finds his airwaves filled with soul-searching monologues about his unsatisfactory life. He often delves into tales about his audacious elder brother, Jason Staebler, a relentless dream-chaser, and their shared upbringing under their grandfather's care. Their bond is rekindled when David receives a desperate call from Jason, pleading him to negotiate his release from an Atlantic City jail, where he faces severe charges. Despite deviating from his brother's instructions, David manages to secure Jason's release through Lewis, Jason's associate. He discovers that Jason is now submerged in the murky world of Atlantic City's third-rate resort hotels, fronting for the local mob. Jason shares a cramped suite in one of these hotels with his girlfriend, Sally, a former beauty queen clinging desperately to her fading glory, and Jessica, Sally's younger companion to whom she's trying to pass on her beauty queen mantle. Their relationship, however, is layered with hidden complexities. As long as David stays in Atlantic City, Jessica is his tacit partner. Jason, living on the edge of danger and dreams, is attempting to build his own resort casino in Hawaii through his connections with Lewis. He entices David to join him, Sally, and Jessica on this ambitious escapade. David, acquainted with Jason's history of grand illusions, understands that this Hawaiian dream might just be another castle in the sand. But he stays put, hoping that their brotherly bond will weather the storm. However, Jason's life is a precarious house of cards, teetering on the brink of collapse. His reckless pursuit of dreams, coupled with an unlucky streak, casts a looming shadow over their lives, turning it into a high-stakes game of Monopoly. As the brothers grapple with this life of uncertainty, real-life consequences threaten to reduce their world to a mere radio drama.
