Plot

In the tumultuous year of 1938, Father Francis Chisholm, a priest of unconventional wisdom and a life story as captivating as his sermons, finds himself grappling with his Bishop's request to retire. His narrative unfolds through the pages of his journals, discovered by an inquisitive Monsignor. From a tragedy-stricken orphan swept up by a tempestuous storm, to being nurtured under his Aunt Polly's care, Father Chisholm's journey has been far from ordinary. After the death of his childhood sweetheart, a profound loss that shapes his destiny, he embraces the priesthood. Guided by his mentor, Bishop Hamish MacNabb, he embarks on a mission to China, stepping into a world of unfamiliar customs and non-Christian beliefs. He is met with the ashes of his burnt church and a congregation of rice Christians, a practice he boldly erases. Despite the harsh realities and numerous setbacks, including disease, poverty, and isolation, his determination remains unshaken. Facing a host of challenges, he finds a breakthrough when he heals the son of a local Mandarin, who, in gratitude, endows him with a piece of land and the means to erect not just a church, but also a school and a dispensary. This sacred compound, a beacon of hope amidst adversity, is further uplifted by the arrival of three nuns. Yet, his inability to befriend the austere Mother Superior casts a heavy shadow over his conscience. Surviving a brutal war between Imperial and Nationalist troops, and mourning the loss of a close friend, Father Chisholm returns to Scotland as an old man. His view of the world, etched by his experiences, leaves a profound impression on the Monsignor who finds himself drawn into the priest's compelling life story. While his boyhood friend thrives as a priest in a more Christian part of the world, Father Chisholm's struggles resonate more profoundly, painting a picture of quiet determination, understanding, and patience that ultimately leads to his acceptance and the growth of his congregation among the Chinese.
