In the shadowy world of espionage, Harry Palmer, a British Army sergeant with a checkered past, finds himself reluctantly thrust into a complex web of intrigue and deception. Under the watchful eye of Colonel Ross at the Ministry of Defense, Palmer's routine existence of mundane stakeouts takes a dramatic turn when he's reassigned to Major Dalby's counterespionage unit.
The disappearance of Dr. Radcliffe, a renowned British scientist, becomes Palmer's primary concern. Radcliffe is the latest in a string of inexplicable vanishings within the British scientific community, and the race to locate and retrieve him has Dalby's team on edge. The only clue to Radliffe's whereabouts is a cryptic trail leading to Eric Grantby, known in the clandestine circles as Bluejay, and his enigmatic Chief of Staff, Housemartin.
Palmer, despite his initial reluctance, forms alliances with fellow agents Jock Carswell and Jean Courtney.
