Plot

In the twilight of his life, 80-year-old Ali Ungar stumbles upon a harrowing revelation nestled between the pages of a book written by a former SS officer. The chilling accounts of wartime atrocities in Slovakia are not just tales from a dark past but also the narrative of his parents' final moments. Driven by a concoction of grief and bitterness, Ali embarks on a quest for revenge, only to come face-to-face with Georg, the 70-year-old son of his parents' executioner. Unlike his father, Georg is a retired teacher who has spent his life consciously distancing himself from the shadow of his father's sins. Intrigued by Ali's arrival and the chance to unravel the enigmatic threads of his family history, Georg offers his linguistic skills to Ali, becoming his interpreter. Together, these unlikely companions - two souls bound by a shared history and torn apart by opposing perspectives - embark on a poignant journey. They traverse through the forgotten corners of Slovakia, meeting the reticent witnesses of the wartime tragedy who echo a country's desperate attempt to bury its past. As the duo delve deeper, they grapple with the fragility of memory, witnessing how truth and imagination often intertwine, blurring the lines of reality. Through a shared silence and a mutual quest for identity, Ali and Georg discover more than just their past. They stumble upon a profound understanding of themselves and each other, a testament to the power of connection born amidst the echoes of a collective tragedy.
