The Hurricane (1937)

In the heart of the South Seas, on the tranquil Island of Manukura, French colonial rule and Polynesian traditions harmoniously coalesce. Among the natives, Terangi, a charismatic leader and the first mate of the towering ship Katopua, navigated by Captain Nagle, stands out. His joyous union with his beloved Marama is short-lived as he embarks on a 600-mile voyage to Tahiti. However, the Polynesian tranquility is disrupted when Terangi, in a Tahitian bar, retaliates against a racist Frenchman's offensive remarks, breaking his jaw. Despite the Frenchman's alcohol-induced provocation and Captain Nagle's testimonies, Terangi faces the harsh hand of justice. His adversary's political ties lead to his sentencing to six months of forced labor, turning a deaf ear to pleas for mercy from the island's inhabitants, including Governor Eugene DeLaage. Each failed attempt to escape the prison only adds to Terangi's sentence, as he battles the constraints of cold iron bars and the longing for his home. After eight long years, he finally manages to escape, leading to jubilant celebrations on Manukura. Assisted by the compassionate Father Paul, Terangi returns to his island, only to find himself pursued by the relentless Governor DeLaage. However, harmony and conflict on the island are overshadowed by an impending disaster; a devastating hurricane is heading towards Manukura. As the governor sets off to apprehend the escaped Terangi, the island is threatened by the impending natural catastrophe.
