In the heart of New York City, Dr. Herbert Bock, the venerable Chief of Medicine at Manhattan Medical Center, grapples with a life spiraling out of control. His personal life lies in ruins, marred by a crumbling marriage and estranged offspring whom he blames for their own shortcomings, reflecting his self-induced guilt. Adding to his misery, his professional haven — the teaching hospital — is teetering on the brink of chaos, mirroring his personal turmoil. As Bock wallows in self-pity in a run-down hotel, the hospital is plagued by a series of confounding events. A vehement protest against questionable property development brews outside, leaving the already frazzled Chief of Administration, Dr. John Sundstrom, to handle the crisis. Meanwhile, inside the hospital walls, the shocking discovery of a young resident, Dr. Howard Schaefer, dead in his own bed, raises alarming questions about the hospital's competence. The day grows from bad to worse as the hospital staff scurries to douse one fire after another, seemingly ignited by mismanagement and incompetence. With more medical staff found dead in uncanny circumstances, it becomes evident that there's something far more sinister at play. Amidst this pandemonium, Bock finds flickers of purpose in the case of Edward Drummond, who arrived healthy but has now slipped into a coma due to staff negligence. This unexpected silver lining arrives in the form of Drummond's daughter, the compassionate and fiery Barbara Drummond, a nurse herself. Barbara's will to rescue her father and return him to his missionary work in Mexico stirs dormant emotions in Bock, rekindling his will to live and love. As Bock finds solace in Barbara's presence, the chilling truth unravels - the inexplicable hospital deaths are not accidents, but murders. This revelation plunges Bock deeper into the labyrinth of chaos, where he must confront his demons and uncover the truth lurking within the hospital's hallowed halls.
