The Hellbenders (1967)

In the grim aftermath of the devastating American Civil War, the battle-hardened and ruthless Confederate commander, Colonel Jonas, refuses to let the conflict die. Still smarting from defeat, he masterminds a daring plot to resurrect the Confederacy and clinch the victory they once tasted. At the helm of the Hellbenders battalion, Jonas and his three fiercely loyal sons orchestrate a bloody ambush on an unsuspecting regiment of Union Soldiers, seizing millions in banknotes. The spoils of their merciless slaughter are concealed within a wooden coffin, alleged to carry the body of Jonas' deceased son. To navigate through the hostile territories unscathed, Jonas employs a cunning ruse. He hires Claire, a dance-hall girl with a penchant for liquor, to masquerade as the grieving widow accompanying her husband's body to its final resting place at Hondo River. This intricate deception is designed to deflect scrutiny and pave their way towards a new dawn for the Confederacy. However, the journey to the river is fraught with peril and treachery. The ominous whisper of a merciless gang of soldiers' killers raises suspicion among the Union soldiers. A posse of cowboys and a war party of Indians adds to their mounting threats. Internal strife festers among Jonas and his sons, threatening to tear their unity apart. With each passing mile, the odds of reaching their destination unscathed dwindle. As they traverse through the relentless dangers of the Southwest, the remaining Hellbenders must confront their own demons and the enemy's blade. The question remains: will they survive long enough to ignite the long-extinguished flames of the War between the States, or will their audacious plan crumble in the dust of the very lands they seek to conquer?
