Plot

In the year 1873, the alluring Gold Trail of Montana witnesses the arrival of the enigmatic Dr. Joseph Frail. This man of mystery, a dominant force, finds his way to the gold-rush gripped small town of Skull Creek. His first act, purchasing a cabin perched on a hilltop, offers him a panoramic view of the unfolding drama beneath. His eyes soon fall on young Rune, a petty thief pursued by a mob thirsty for lynching. Dr. Frail, a man with uncanny healing skills, saves Rune, binding him in servitude in return. Meanwhile, the town's alcoholic preacher, George Grubb, paints a chilling picture of Dr. Frail, branding him a devil with a past shrouded in enigma. Despite his fervor, Grubb's warnings fall on deaf ears, drowned by the clamor of the gold rush. As fate would have it, a stagecoach robbery sends ripples through Skull Creek. The only survivor, the coachman, brings news of a young woman left in the aftermath. The townsmen rally, and their pursuit leads them to the Swedish Elizabeth Mahler: burnt, blind, and bereft of her father - a casualty of the heist. Dr. Frail, along with Rune, take Elizabeth under their care. Elizabeth, healed and grateful, develops an unrequited affection for Dr. Frail. Choosing to remain in Skull Creek, she partners with Rune and the rough-hewn Frenchy Plante in a gold-seeking venture, funded secretly by Dr. Frail. When she uncovers his financial intervention, Elizabeth bristles at his attempt to control her destiny, vowing to repay him someday. Their venture, The Lucky Lady Mine, strikes gold following a fortuitous accident involving a fallen tree. Frenchy, drunk on success and liquor, sets off a chain of events that jeopardize not just the newfound wealth, but also the lives of the locals and the uneasy equilibrium of Skull Creek. At the heart of this maelstrom are Dr. Frail, Elizabeth, and Rune, their fates bound by the tumultuous turns of their gold-laden destiny. Steeped in the atmosphere of the old West, The Hanging Tree is a tale of gold, desire, and redemption, where the past casts long shadows over the present, with Gary Cooper's performance as the new doctor adding a riveting touch to this narrative.
