Plot

In the nostalgic aftermath of World War I, Waldo Pepper, a spirited flight trainer, yearns for a glory that eluded him during the war. Known as "The Great Waldo Pepper," he contends for the title of the best WWI fighter pilot, a distinction he believes belongs to the German ace, Ernst Kessler. Waldo's flight commander, Newt, however, holds an unwavering belief that had Waldo joined the war sooner, his natural prowess would have been unquestioned. In the post-war era, Waldo, like many of his fellow pilots, turns to barnstorming to earn his keep. Yet instead of the paltry flights he serves up to his adoring fans, he yearns for a grander stage: Dillhoefer's famed flying circus. But to be granted entrance into this aerial spectacle, Waldo is tasked with performing a death-defying stunt that will satiate the thrill-hungry audience. In his quest for glory, Waldo enlists the help of Axel Olsson, a rival pilot with equal audacity, and Ezra Stiles, an ingenious plane designer who happens to be the brother of Waldo's girlfriend, Maude. Together, they dare to push the limits of aviation by attempting the first-ever outside loop. But when the specter of death threatens to become more than just a part of the stunt, Waldo's life is thrown into a tailspin. With his barnstorming career hanging by a thread, Waldo turns his sights towards a new pursuit – a film career that promises to recapture the heroics of the Great War's aerial dogfights. In this unexpected venture, Waldo is given a chance to rewrite his legacy, proving once and for all if he truly is the greatest fighter pilot the world never got to see in action.
