The Ghost Walks (1934)

On a tempestuous night, renowned playwright Prescott Ames, alongside theatrical producer Herman Wood and his trusty secretary Erskine, find themselves marooned when their car skids off the road into the inky darkness. Seeking shelter, they stumble upon the isolated dwelling of Dr. Kent, a confidant of Ames. A peculiar tension hangs heavy in the air, as one of Kent's patients, residing at the house, exhibits erratic behavior, linked, they are told, to the anniversary of her husband's chilling murder. As the evening unfolds, the dinner table transforms into a battlefield of accusations concerning the unresolved murder. Suddenly, the house plunges into darkness, marking the ominous onset of a sequence of mysterious and unnerving events. Unbeknownst to Wood, a crafty twist awaits him; Ames has orchestrated an elaborate ruse, employing a troupe of actors to perform his latest play, with Wood unknowingly set to play a part. However, the lines between fiction and reality blur when an escaped lunatic infiltrates the house, taking the liberty to 'rewrite' Ames's play in a macabre fashion. As the madman’s murderous attempts on the cast members unfold, Wood and Erskine find themselves ensnared in a chilling drama, believing the blood-curdling events to be part of the theatrical performance.
