Plot

In the tumultuous 1930s, the once influential Sir Winston Churchill (Albert Finney) finds himself in the twilight of his political career. Out of government, he sits as a backbench Member of Parliament, his once powerful voice now reduced to a whisper amid the clamour of Parliament. Yet, his spirit remains unquenchable, his foresight undimmed. Despite his fall from grace, he persists in warning his peers about the looming danger of German rearmament and the rising storm of a second major war. Stripped of power and influence, Churchill is a solitary figure, his warnings dismissed as the ramblings of a warmonger. His speeches, once met with applause, are now met with laughter and derision. Yet, undeterred, he continues to rail against the apathy of a nation still haunted by the spectre of World War I, striving to awaken Britain to the impending danger. Churchill's sole means of support come from his writing - a biography of his ancestor, the Duke of Marlborough, and a newspaper column. His financial stability is shaken by the Wall Street crash, but his resolve remains unbroken, thanks in part to a tight-knit group of supporters. Central to this group is his beloved wife, Clementine (Vanessa Redgrave), his stalwart and loving confidante. The tide begins to change when Churchill receives insider information, revealing the government's underestimation of German rearmament. Armed with this knowledge, he presents accurate figures to Parliament, his voice growing louder, his warnings harder to ignore. As the ominous shadow of World War II falls upon Europe in September 1939, Churchill is pulled back into government as the First Lord of the Admiralty. His twilight years are far from over, his voice no longer a whisper, but a gathering storm.
