Plot

Nestled in the heart of Kyoto, Shorin's Women's College, established in 1908, stands as a beacon of higher learning, albeit under the guise of a finishing school for affluent young women. This private institution, a boarding school, is seen by most as a springboard for these women to emerge as perfect wife-material for prominent husbands. However, beneath this façade of nurturing care, the school's policies echo a bygone era of repression and control, transforming it into a cage without bars. The school's administrators, seemingly caring, are primarily concerned with the school's image to the outside world. This obsession with appearances is fueled by their reliance on donations from wealthy industrialists. The students, chafing under these oppressive conditions, often see the dormitory matron, Mayumi Gojô, as the embodiment of this tyranny. Amidst the sea of discontent, the stories of two students, the fiery Akiko Hayashino and the earnest Yoshie Izushi, unfold. Akiko, the daughter of a wealthy industrialist, is seen as the leading rebel. Her privileged status, coupled with her possession of damaging information about the school, gives her a unique leverage. However, whispers of her being a communist, a political stance viewed as a threat, cast a shadow over her fight for change. On the other hand, Yoshie, a working-class girl, yearns for knowledge and a life with her poor activist boyfriend, Sankichi Shimoda. However, her father's attempts to marry her off to a prosperous businessman, paired with her struggle to catch up acadically due to her work commitments, adds layers of complexity to her life. As these young women strive for a more humane environment, the administrators craftily manipulate the dissent, creating divisions based on lies and divergent motivations. The Garden of Women paints a vivid portrait of their struggle for autonomy and respect in a rigidly structured world.
