In the wake of his grueling experience as a POW during the Korean War, seasoned veteran Alan Eaton finds himself returning to the heart of American civilization, Washington, D.C., eager to rekindle his old life. His first order of business is to reclaim his stake in the public relations-opinion research firm he co-ran with his partner, Clark Baker. However, he's blindsided by the revelation of Clark's untimely demise in a hit-and-run incident, and the subsequent takeover of their firm by an ambitious employee, Jim McGinnis.
Despite the unsettling discoveries, Alan contests the legality of the takeover, arguing that Clark only had the authority to manage, not sell the firm sans his consent. McGinnis, sly and manipulative, retorts that Alan had been informed via letters during his captivity, and then, with a veil of pseudo-sympathy, offers Alan a position within the company, hoping to capitalize on the respected Eaton name.
Undecided, Alan seeks counsel from his long-term ally, Senator Walder, who confides his suspicions about the firm's dubious new operations under McGinnis. He urges Alan to infiltrate the organization, to unearth any misconduct. Encouraged, Alan steps into the lion's den, with the aid of Lorraine Dennis, a young and empathetic secretary.
Their investigation unravels a complex web of deceit, where McGinnis is orchestrating a grand scheme of manipulating statistics and poll data to control the fate of public office candidates, all while lining his pockets. Aided by a shadowy network of subversive allies, McGinnis' operation seems invincible. Alan and Lorraine soon realize that unmasking the truth is only half the battle. They must gather irrefutable evidence and brave the dangerous path to justice, risking everything to expose the deception festering at the heart of their nation.
