Plot

In the sweltering Mississippi summer, fourteen-year-old Robbie Hendrick finds himself in a challenging caretaker role for his elderly Grandma Gimmel and his younger half-brother Fess Hendrick. With their wayward mother mysteriously absent again, succumbing to her own inner demons, Robbie must navigate the turbulence of adolescence, while shouldering the responsibilities of an adult. Robbie's life is a balancing act of maintaining a tough exterior to conceal the chaos within. He is a lone warrior, with Fess as his only ally, as he embarks on petty crimes to add a tinge of luxury to their otherwise bleak existence. The local authorities remain oblivious to their mother's abandonment, thanks to Robbie's cunning deception that keeps the fragment of a family together. As Robbie grapples with marginal grades that threaten his progression to high school, an unexpected lifeline appears. His school principal, Mr. Curtis, offers him a deal: write a compelling end-of-summer essay and earn a pass to the next grade. Robbie's struggle to articulate his tumultuous life in words coincides with the return of his older brother, Lucas Hendrick. Lucas, a prodigal son who squandered his promising future in football by flunking college, reenters their lives, bringing with him a whirlwind of fresh challenges. His arrival adds more complexity to Robbie's already problematic summer. With each passing day and night, Robbie's dreams of having a complete family seem more elusive, as he faces the dreadful possibility of losing the only constant in his life: his half-brother Fess. As the summer sun blazes on, Robbie's journey of resilience, hope, and the pursuit of a distant dream unfolds in "The Dynamiter".
