Plot

As World War II nears its end, the world of theater finds itself in the hands of the aging actor Sir (Sir Anthony Hopkins) and his wife, Her Ladyship (Emily Watson). Despite the war's toll on their troupe, they persist in bringing the magic of Shakespeare to the war-weary provinces. Sir's health is in decline, his body echoing the chaos of the world outside, yet he refuses to surrender to his frailty, discharging himself from the hospital. Her Ladyship implores him to withdraw from his upcoming performance of "King Lear," but the voice of dissent echoes from an unexpected corner. Norman (Sir Ian McKellen), Sir's vibrant, outspoken, and gay dresser, is adamantly against the idea of a cancelled performance. He sees in Sir a spark yet to be extinguished, a swan song waiting to be sung. With persuasive coaxing, he encourages the beleaguered Sir to step into the shoes of King Lear one last time, navigating the blurred lines between master and servant, actor and character. Their relationship, reminiscent of King Lear and his fool, serves as a poignant backdrop to their shared journey. Even in the face of impending disappointment, Norman remains steadfast, serving his master with unwavering dedication.
