Plot

In the heart of 1961's Ballarat, wedding bells resonate, but not for Dr. Lucien Blake and Jean Beazley - not just yet. Invited to attend what was touted as Ballarat's social event of the year, a high-profile wedding, the night unravels into a whirlpool of darkness, prompting Blake and Jean to beat a hasty retreat. The subsequent dawn, however, uncovers a gruesome discovery - a key member of the bridal party found lifeless at the reception venue. As the echoes of the murder reverberate, Blake finds himself drawn into an investigation, albeit unofficially. He has been tasked by an estranged relative to unravel a missing person's case in Melbourne. What seems at first to be a simple disappearance spirals into a complex mystery with dangerous tendrils reaching back to the murder at the wedding. Blake's search for the missing Catherine Lucas, his aunt Dorothy's granddaughter, leads him to a chilling discovery in Melbourne - a woman dead in a cellar. As the police unravel her identity, the threads of the two investigations intertwine, revealing a morbid tapestry of deceit, murder, and blackmail. The disappearance, the wedding night murder, and the dead woman are all pieces of a sinister puzzle. Amidst the investigations, revelations surface of scams targeting the elderly, implicating the bride's supposed father, Milton Dunne. With Milton's subsequent murder, the plot thickens. When the bride discloses her pregnancy with the slain groom's child, the stakes are raised even higher. The investigation takes another turn when Patrick Tyneman, father of the murdered groom, is found dead in a submerged car. The key to this macabre mystery lies with young waitress Roslyn, who catches Blake's eye. Her sapphire bracelet, the symptoms of a familial heart condition, and the sapphire stone found at the murder scene weave a web of damning evidence leading to the shocking revelation of her being the half-sister to the murdered groom. In between the tumultuous investigations, Blake and Jean search for Catherine, leading to their own journey of self-discovery and familial revelations. Amidst the tension, they manage to have a joyous wedding, only to be called back to their grim reality by the ever-present specter of crime. In this labyrinth of deception and familial discord, Blake discovers that the answers might lie buried in the past, hidden in the strained relationship he had with his own father. As the plot unravels, the story seamlessly navigates through a maze of three murders, two weddings, and a funeral, with the promise of more mysteries in the shadows.
