Plot

In the sweeping backdrop of the countryside, Célestine (Paulette Goddard), a captivating chambermaid, embarks on a new chapter of her life at the household of the Lanlaires. Armed with her allure and a plan to entice a wealthy man, she quickly realizes that Mr. Lanlaire (Reginald Owen) is far from an ideal target. The household is a fortress, with Madame Lanlaire (Dame Judith Anderson) reigning supreme, aided by her enigmatic valet, Joseph (Francis Lederer). Undeterred, Célestine sets her sights on the neighboring former officer, Mauger (Burgess Meredith), her beauty proving to be a powerful weapon. Just as her plan seems to be falling into place, the Lanlaires' son, young and appealing Georges Lanlaire (Hurd Hatfield), returns. A man of progressive ideals, he is untouched by his mother's disdain for Republicans. Caught in a riveting triangle, Célestine finds herself captivating three different men, each hailing from different social strata and harboring distinct life philosophies. Will Célestine manage to sway the young Lanlaire with her sincerity? Will the unyielding and enigmatic Joseph allow his perceptions of Célestine to be shattered? The Diary of a Chambermaid offers an unvarnished exploration of humanity, tinted with intrigue and disillusionment.
