In the sweeping backdrop of the countryside, Célestine (Paulette Goddard), a captivating chambermaid, embarks on a new chapter of her life at the household of the Lanlaires. Armed with her allure and a plan to entice a wealthy man, she quickly realizes that Mr. Lanlaire (Reginald Owen) is far from an ideal target. The household is a fortress, with Madame Lanlaire (Dame Judith Anderson) reigning supreme, aided by her enigmatic valet, Joseph (Francis Lederer).
Undeterred, Célestine sets her sights on the neighboring former officer, Mauger (Burgess Meredith), her beauty proving to be a powerful weapon. Just as her plan seems to be falling into place, the Lanlaires' son, young and appealing Georges Lanlaire (Hurd Hatfield), returns. A man of progressive ideals, he is untouched by his mother's disdain for Republicans.
