Plot

In the heart of New York City, nestled within an eight-story building, lies the Metropolitan Garage - a clandestine hub for stolen automobiles. Run by the seemingly harmless Jenkins and his puppet master, 'The Dummy', a shrewd deaf-mute posing as a butler, the garage is a labyrinth of crime. From the ground-floor cache of stolen cars, to the repair shop on the second, storage rooms on the third to fifth floors, and the paint shop on the sixth where stolen cars are transformed, the operation is a well-oiled machine. The seventh floor hosts a speakeasy, and the eighth is where Jenkins resides in luxury, oblivious to the city's finest. Into this underworld stumbles Orville "Gabby" Denton, a lovable drifter and gambler, who secures a mechanic's gig at the garage, unwittingly entering a den of thieves. He captures the heart of Silver, Jenkins's quick-witted girlfriend, igniting a romance that shakes the very foundation of the criminal enterprise. When an order for a high-priced sedan sends the gang into a frenzy, a hit-and-run accident involving Gabby's nephew, Buddy, triggers a chain of events that threatens to expose the operation. Gabby's suspicions are aroused when a friend's description of the hit-and-run car matches a vehicle hastily repainted at the garage. Confirming his suspicions, Gabby unearths evidence linking the stolen car to Buddy's accident. His revelation pushes his honest brother-in-law, Beef Evans, over the edge. A drunken confrontation with Jenkins and The Dummy leads to Beef's demise, cleverly staged as an accident. Undeterred, Gabby, armed with a photograph proving Beef's murder and Silver's assistance, wages a war against the criminals. In a heart-stopping finale, Jenkins and The Dummy, under the cover of darkness, attempt a daring escape, colliding with an incoming car and plummeting down an elevator shaft. With the stolen car ring dismantled, Gabby and Silver unite in matrimony, bringing a ray of hope to the gritty underbelly of the city.
