Plot
Claude Pierce, a boy gleaming with anticipation, moves to lower Manhattan to live with his father, Jay Pierce, an architect battling against the tide of his struggling career. His arrival is ill-timed, coinciding with the grim day his classmate, Gig Stevens, loses his father to a murder conviction. Consequently, Claude finds himself in the crosshairs of Gig, his loyal sidekick, Buck Murphy, and their tight-knit gang.
Claude, however, refuses to be a victim. He dives into the brutal world of boxing, and after standing his ground against the more formidable Buck, he finds an uneasy acceptance within the gang. Together, they embark on a noble mission to secure a decent tombstone for Gig's father, a mission that requires them to step into the murky world of theft.
Driven by desperation, they decide to rob a seemingly deserted mansion of its lavish toys to pawn. Led by Claude, they execute the plan successfully, but their victory is short-lived when a keen-eyed policeman drags them before a judge. The twist in the tale? The mansion was Claude's, and the toys were his. Although Claude walks free, the incident drives a wedge between him and the others.
Buck and Gig, now on probation, decide to run away, roping in a reluctant Claude. Their journey takes a dangerous turn when they unknowingly hitch a ride with a gang of ruthless criminals. When the criminals discover that Claude's mother is a millionaire, they hatch a sinister plan for ransom. Their fate hangs in the balance at a French cafe, where Claude cleverly sends a coded message to the owner in French, triggering an explosive confrontation with the law.
Despite adversities, Claude's bravery and quick-thinking shine through, painting a vivid portrait of friendship, courage, and resilience in the face of hardship.
