The Devil Bat (1940)

In the small town of Heathville, renowned scientist Dr. Paul Carruthers finds himself ensnared in a web of resentment and revenge. Despite being instrumental in the growth of the local chemical company, he watches from the sidelines as owners Martin Heath and Don Morton prosper from his groundbreaking research. Consumed with bitterness, Dr. Carruthers hatches a diabolical plan to wreak havoc on the very families that betrayed him. Harnessing the power of electricity, he engineers a monstrous bat, a sinister creature of the night with one deadly purpose. As part of his revenge, he concocts an alluring aftershave lotion, a seemingly innocent product that is nothing less than a death sentence. Members of the Heath and Morton families unwittingly become test subjects, luring the giant bat with the irresistible scent of the lotion. One by one, they fall prey to the bat's ferocious attacks, each victim meeting a grisly end as the creature strikes at their necks. Meanwhile, ambitious reporter Johnny Layton and his savvy photographer 'One-Shot' McGuire are dispatched by their editor from the Chicago Register to unravel the mystery surrounding the macabre murders. As Layton delves deeper into the case, he finds himself drawn to the enchanting Mary Heath, further entangling him in the Heath family's perilous predicament. As the bat continues its relentless assault, Layton begins to piece together the terrifying truth. Risking everything, he sets a daring trap, dousing both himself and Dr. Carruthers with the deadly lotion. As the giant bat descends in a screaming, swooping power dive, the suspense reaches a fever pitch. Will Layton's audacious plan succeed, or will the devil bat claim its next victim?
