The Deceivers (1988)

In the year 1825, the heart of British-ruled India throbs with dread, a chilling fear woven into its vibrant tapestry. A shadowy cult, followers of a mysterious religion, ruthlessly eliminate all who dare cross their path. Amidst this reign of terror, William Savage, a tax-collector for a British-Indian company, emerges as an unlikely hero. His life takes an eventful turn when he marries Sarah, the daughter of his commanding officer, Colonel Wilson, soon after an exhilarating tiger hunt. A chance encounter with a widow about to commit 'Sati' as per Hindu customs leads Savage to a terrifying discovery: affluent individuals are being systematically murdered by a deadly gang of thugs. With the assistance of Raja Chandra Singh, he unveils a gruesome graveyard of fresh corpses. His attempts to expose the bloodbath, however, are thwarted by the British mantra of 'Do Nothing, Have Nothing Done, and Let No One Do Anything', and he is instead pressured into increasing taxes. Undeterred, Savage apprehends several suspected thugs, including a man named Hussein, only to be forced to release them under Wilson's orders. His transfer to a different location looms, but before he can be whisked away, Savage embarks on a daring mission. He transforms himself into Gopal, joins the deadly gang, a motley crew of Hindus and Muslims, and meticulously documents their macabre deeds. Immersed in the gang's workings, Savage soon finds himself spiraling into a dark abyss of uncertainty and danger. After consuming Gurd, consecrated sugar, he suspects he is falling under the spell of the cult's deity, Maa Kaali. His journey takes a darker turn as he strangles the real Gopal and succumbs to the charms of a courtesan. But the true horror awaits him as he uncovers the British authorities' complicity in the gang's crimes, accepting bribes to turn a blind eye. Now, Savage must confront the shocking possibility of being branded an 'approver,' a pawn in this deadly game of deception and death. Can he navigate this treacherous labyrinth and survive the deceivers?
