The Damned (1947)

In the grim, dwindling days of the Third Reich, dated April 19, 1945, a motley crew of Nazis and their affiliates - encompassing a Wehrmacht general, an SS commander and his aide, an Italian magnate and his wife, who is the general's mistress, and a French collaborator - embark on a desperate submarine escape to South America, seeking sanctuary amidst the ruins of their ideology. Their journey takes them through the treacherous waters of the Bay of Biscay, off the coast of the newly freed French harbor, Royan. In a twist of fate, they seize a French medic, Dr. Gilbert, to tend to a wounded comrade. Now, the doctor finds himself trapped within the claustrophobic confines of the submarine, shoulder to shoulder with the very faces of the enemy. The air within the vessel grows increasingly stifling as tension rise - a simmering microcosm of war's aftermath, floating through the relentless sea towards an uncertain future.
