Plot

Meet Dan Landsman, once a high school nobody and now the self-appointed mastermind behind the twenty-year reunion of his graduating class from Grant Barklidge High School in Pittsburgh. Living in the shadow of his high school days, Dan is on a desperate quest for popularity, a mission that paints every facet of his life, including his relationship with his wife, Stacey, and their fourteen-year-old son, Zach, who's on the precipice of his own adolescent journey. Dan's relentless control over the reunion, his insistence on adorning himself with "cool" nicknames, and his inability to escape his high school mindset, not only frustrate his fellow committee members but also threaten to ruin the very event he's trying so hard to perfect. With the reunion's attendance rate looking bleak, Dan hatches a grand plan - to compel Oliver Lawless, the class heartthrob turned Hollywood actor, to attend the event. In Dan's distorted memory, he and Oliver were buddies, a claim that couldn't be further from reality. Undeterred, Dan embarks on an audacious journey from Pittsburgh to LA, weaving an intricate web of lies to entice Oliver. However, his plan spirals out of control when the unpredictable Lawless infiltrates Dan's home, career, and life in a way he never foresaw. As he grapples with the chaos, Dan is forced to examine his friendships, his relationship with his boss stuck in a pre-digital era, and his own desires, all under the looming shadow of the upcoming reunion. In 'The D Train,' Jack Black and James Marsden deliver outrageous performances that pose a thought-provoking question: How far would you go for popularity? With a strong supporting cast featuring Kathryn Hahn and Jeffrey Tambor, this audacious tale of a man's quest for acceptance weaves an intricate narrative of lies, obsessions, and the haunting specter of high school popularity that promises to keep viewers intrigued.
