The Curse of the Jade Scorpion (2001)

In the heart of New York City, circa 1940, we meet CW Briggs, a seasoned insurance investigator with an astounding reputation and Betty Ann Fitzgerald, a newly appointed efficiency expert at the North Coast Fidelity & Casualty Company. Their clash of methodologies, Briggs's gut instinct-driven approach vs. Fitzgerald's logic and order, has sparked an office rivalry so intense it’s almost tangible. Their professional battleground is further complicated when Betty Ann begins a clandestine affair with Chris Magruder Jr., the newly appointed head of the firm, and initiates a trial project that outsources investigative work to a private company - a direct affront to Briggs's role. This plot twist, coupled with a string of suspiciously unsolved robberies, pushes Briggs to suspect Fitzgerald of foul play. Simultaneously, Fitzgerald, armed with incriminating evidence from the private investigators, begins to suspect Briggs. Yet, a part of her, an instinct contradicting her usual reliance on logic, refuses to accept his guilt. As they oscillate between suspecting and defending each other, their journey takes them back to a fateful office party. On this night, both were unknowingly hypnotized by Voltan, a stage magician with a sinister agenda. The hypnotic suggestion planted by Voltan makes Briggs commit robberies without any recollection, plunging him into an investigation with himself as the prime suspect. As the plot unravels, Briggs and Fitzgerald find themselves entangled in a web of hypnotic crime, secret trysts, and professional rivalry. To uncover the truth, they must evade the police, challenge their own beliefs, and navigate through a haze of hypnotic suggestions. Will they set aside their differences and reveal the true culprit, or will their rivalry overshadow the truth and lead them down a path of mutual destruction?
