The Complex (2013)

In the heart of a baffling apartment complex, nursing student Asuka (Atsuko Maeda) commences a new chapter with her family. The first night in her fresh quarters, an eerie scratching sound echoing from her neighbor's dwelling jolts her awake. This neighbor is a solitary elderly man who has consistently shunned all social advances. Asuka, driven by concern, steps into his home only to be met by the grim sight of his lifeless body, starved to death. Unsettlingly, it appears he'd been desperately attempting to claw his way into her apartment. Asuka soon learns from the complex's handyman, Shinobu (Hiroki Narimiya), tasked with the morbid cleanup, that the complex's past is tainted with a series of inexplicable deaths. Sinister whispers of hauntings ripple through her school. When the nocturnal scratching resurrects, Asuka finds herself face-to-face with a spectral image of the old man in her neighbor's apartment. Her world turns upside down when she returns to an empty apartment, her family mysteriously vanished. Asuka turns to Shinobu for help, who ropes in a spiritualist to cleanse Asuka of the malevolent forces ensnaring her. As the spiritualist unravels Asuka's tangled situation, she stumbles upon clues that point not towards the old man, but towards a young boy residing in the complex. This boy's past mirrors Asuka's own tragic history she stubbornly refuses to acknowledge, paving the way for a haunting truth.
