The Christmas House (2020)

As the yuletide season descends upon the tranquil Hudson Valley in upstate New York, two weeks shy of Christmas, retired couple Phylis and Bill Mitchell, a former teacher and contractor respectively, decide to rekindle a twenty-year-old family tradition— "The Christmas House." This cherished ritual involves a complete transformation of their home into a Christmas wonderland, a task that previously took over a month and every family member's involvement. Summoned earlier than planned are their grown sons, Mike Mitchell, a Hollywood television series star, and Brandon Mitchell, a Denver bakery owner, along with Brandon's husband, Jake. They are tasked with the nostalgic undertaking of reviving the festive ambiance, inside and out. Yet, one element of the tradition remains untouched - Mike's childhood magic act known as "Majestic Mike," performed with his old friend, Andi Cruz, fondly called "Awesome Andi." The plot takes a turn when Andi, now divorced and back in town with her adolescent son Noah, reenters Mike's life. Unknowingly, she had broken Mike's heart in high school, a wound that reveals itself as old feelings resurface. As Noah expresses interest in magic, Mike contemplates passing on his magical mantle. However, as the Mitchells engage in the laborious task of decorating the house, they struggle to summon the genuine Christmas spirit. Mike senses an unsettling undercurrent amid the festive preparations, a sign that secrets are being kept. Each family member, including Mike himself, harbors undisclosed information about their personal lives, creating a ripple in their holiday harmony. Brandon and Jake anxiously await a call about their first child's adoption, adding another layer to the family's collective apprehension. These veiled truths begin to surface, threatening to make this Christmas House different from all the previous, possibly even bittersweet. The Mitchell family navigates challenging decisions, hoping that the magic of the Christmas House will guide them towards resolution, and eventually create an unforgettable holiday season for the family and their community.
