Plot

In the rugged heart of 18th-century Peru, the ancient Inca rope bridge of San Luis Rey tragically collapses, plummeting five diverse travelers into the abyss of the Andean chasm. Among the survivors is Brother Juniper, a Catholic friar who narrowly escapes the catastrophe. Shaken by the tragedy, he finds himself consumed by an obsessive quest: to unravel the intertwining threads of fate that led these five individuals of disparate backgrounds and stations to meet their end on the bridge. Is it a mere existential happenstance, or is there an unseen cosmic design at play? These questions drive Brother Juniper to delve into the labyrinth of the victims' lives, painstakingly piecing together their stories over five years. His findings, published in a book, challenge the conventional beliefs of his time, stirring up a storm that reaches the hallowed halls of the Church. Accused of heresy by the worldly Archbishop of Lima, Brother Juniper finds himself at the center of a spiritual maelstrom, standing trial before the formidable Inquisition. The Bridge of San Luis Rey is a riveting tale of faith, destiny, and the search for meaning amid life's unpredictable tragedies. Set against the sprawling backdrop of Lima, Peru, this film explores the eternal question of divine providence in a world fraught with human suffering.
