The Blood of a Poet (1932)

In a studio suffused with the scent of wet paint and the whisper of untold stories, a young artist, his heart pulsating with inspiration, sketches a face onto a blank canvas. Abruptly, the mouth of the sketch springs to life, its whispers swirling around the room. Attempting to erase this unexpected aberration, the artist is shocked to discover the chatty mouth has transferred onto his palm. In desperation, he wipes it onto the mouth of an incomplete statue of a graceful maiden. The statue, now imbued with life, cryptically tells him his only escape from the studio is through the mirror. Heeding her advice, the artist leaps into the mirror and finds himself amidst the chaotic pandemonium of the Hotel of Dramatic Lunacies. He tiptoes around peering into the keyholes of various rooms, where he witnesses the intimate despair of hermaphrodites. One bears a chilling sign saying, "Mortal Danger." Returning to his studio, the artist, now overwhelmed, shatters the once silent statue with a sledgehammer. A twist of fate sees him transformed into a statue himself, now perched on the edge of a bustling square. A group of boisterous schoolboys start a snowball fight nearby, leading to the tragic death of one of them. As the life fades from the boy's eyes, a stylish couple begins a tense card game next to his lifeless body. The woman ominously warns the man that without the ace of hearts, he is doomed. The man, in desperation, plucks the ace of hearts from the boy's cold hand. Suddenly, a dark angel, the guardian of the dead child, descends, taking away both the body and the stolen card. Bereft of his lucky charm, the man, in despair, ends his life. The woman, in the surreal twist of events, morphs into the unfinished statue from the artist's studio, and walks away into the unknown.
