Plot

In the cold heart of the 1830's northern England, a tale of resilience unfurls with Riah Millican, a determined widow and mother of three, finding solace in her role as housekeeper to the enigmatic ex-teacher, Percival Miller. Deceptively simple, the gift of a black velvet gown and the promise of education for her children, weave a complex web of gratitude and suspicion in Riah's heart. As she delves deeper into Miller's motives, a chilling revelation prompts her to sever ties, yet Miller's influence persists, even beyond the grave, as he bequeaths his house to her, binding her with a peculiar condition: she must never remarry. The tale then spirals down to Riah's daughter, Biddy, a girl trapped in the limbo of social classes, her education a double-edged sword. As a laundress in a grand house, Biddy's intellect isolates her, turning her into an easy prey. Yet, it simultaneously captures the attention of the house's young heir, offering a glimmer of hope in her bleak existence. Armed with Miller's haunting legacies, Biddy navigates her path, her quest for happiness tinged with the mystery and melancholy of her mother's past.
