Plot

In the iron grip of World War II's most chilling winter, two partisan patriots loyal to the Soviet cause, Sotnikov and Rybak, venture out into the frostbitten wilderness in search of sustenance for themselves and their fellow soldiers. Their hunt leads them to the doorstep of a German Headman, where they discover a sheep ripe for the taking. But their journey back to camp is abruptly halted as they fall into the hands of a brutish Nazi patrol. In the harsh captivity of their enemies, Sotnikov remains an unyielding pillar of his principles, refusing to betray any information under the relentless storm of physical torment and torture. In contrast, Rybak believes survival is paramount, proposing they divulge whatever little they know to buy their lives. Their opposing ideologies lead them down different paths, with one surviving but bearing a cost so profound it blurs the line between triumph and tragedy.
