In the bustling heart of Chennai, two strangers, Sumathi (Vandana) and Subramaniam (Arun Vijay), find themselves at the same cliff's edge - a notorious suicide spot. Each carries a heavy burden that has pushed them towards this ultimate decision. For Sumathi, it's the relentless pressure from her overbearing relatives, who are only interested in her ancestral wealth. On the other hand, Subramaniam finds himself swindled by a so-called friend, leaving him cheated and jobless in Dubai.
Their paths converge in a poignant moment as they both pen their final words on suicide notes, consuming sleeping pills in Subramaniam's apartment, hoping for a peaceful end. Fate, however, has other plans, and their lives are saved by the observant house-owner, Mani (Janakaraj).
As life unfurls its unpredictable tapestry, Subramaniam finds himself in a promising job, while Sumathi is whisked away by her relentless relatives. Soon, the duo find themselves at the threshold of marriages they didn't choose: Subramaniam with a woman his mother approves of and Sumathi with her own maternal uncle. In a bid for freedom, they escape their respective wedding venues, setting the stage for a captivating reunion.
As they navigate through life’s tumultuous waves, the question remains: will they ever find each other again? This riveting narrative forms the core of Thavam (2007), a tale of resilience, hope, and the search for one's own path amidst life's many challenges.
