In the heart of Philadelphia, celebrated soprano Prudence Budell graces her home city with her return, having honed her skills in Europe's most esteemed music institutions for five years. Her wealthy grandmother, Abigail Trent Budell, takes the opportunity to foster her talent, bankrolling an opera company under the expert guidance of the renowned maestro, Jose Iturbi. The company recruits the illustrious tenor, Guido Russino Betelli, but Prudence finds herself unsettled performing alongside him.
One fateful day, Prudence stumbles upon the riveting voice of Johnny Donnetti, an Italian-American truck driver with a surprising flair for opera. Convinced of his potential, she persuades Maestro Iturbi to offer Johnny a chance to shine on the grand stage. As they step into this world of music together, a tender love story begins to unfold. However, their budding romance hits a sour note when Prudence visits Johnny at work and encounters Mary. Misunderstanding abounds as Prudence is led to believe that Johnny harbors feelings for his co-worker, setting the stage for an operatic drama off-stage.
