Terror in the Family (1996)

In the seemingly serene suburban landscape of the 90s, a storm brews within the Marten household. 15-year-old Deena Marten yearns for the very freedom that adolescence teases, but her unyielding rebellious spirit ignites a trail of violence when her desires are denied. Her parents, Cynthia and Todd, are drenched in worry and fear, suspecting Deena's 17-year-old boyfriend, Garret, to be the fuel to her fiery temperament. As Deena's behaviour spirals, so too does the family's unity. Cynthia, heartbroken and desperate, finds solace at the bottom of a bottle, while Todd seeks refuge in the ceaseless demands of his work. Unbeknownst to them, their seemingly innocent 13-year-old Boy Scout, Adam, has his own clandestine dance with vodka, hidden away in the sanctity of his bedroom. What unfolds is an intimate portrait of a family unravelling, a cauldron of secrets simmering beneath a veneer of suburban perfection. Initially, Garret is painted as the villain, the puppet master of Deena's dark transformation. However, as the cracks widen, the true depth of the Marten family's dysfunction becomes evident, spiralling towards an unavoidable crisis. With rebellion, fear, and alcohol stirring behind their perfectly painted front door, the terror within this family threatens to shatter their carefully constructed facade, forever.
