Plot

Set in the transformative era of the 1960s, "Telling Lies in America" follows Karchy (Brad Renfro), a young Hungarian immigrant grappling with his new American reality. Struggling academically and culturally, Karchy finds solace in the world of radio, particularly drawn to the charismatic DJ, Billy Magic (Kevin Bacon), who hosts an alluring Student Hall of Fame competition. After weeks of anticipation, Karchy basks in the victory and the ensuing glamour that comes with spending time with Billy Magic - a man seemingly drowning in wealth, women, and the dazzling allure of fame. Drunk on this newfound popularity, Karchy begins to weave a tapestry of lies, aiming to elevate his status and become the embodiment of 'cool'. However, as the consequences of his lies begin to unravel, hurting those he holds dear, Karchy is faced with a harsh reality check. He learns the bitter truth: the cost of lying far outweighs its fleeting rewards. This revelation guides Karchy on a journey of self-acceptance, leading him to renounce his dishonest ways. Meanwhile, Billy Magic, the master of deception himself, is not exempt from the repercussions of his own fabrications, ultimately paying a steep price for his dishonesty. "Telling Lies in America" masterfully unravels the destructive web of lies spun by its characters, shedding light on the power of truth and authenticity.
