In the sleepy, picturesque town of Ewedown, Dorset, Tamara Drewe, a fiercely independent journalist, comes home to sell her late mother's Winnard Farm. Across the way is Beth Hardiment, who manages a writers retreat alongside her philandering husband, Nicholas, a celebrated author known for his Inchcombe adventures. Nicholas's roving eyes land on younger women frequently, much to Beth's chagrin. As Tamara settles back into Ewedown life, she stumbles upon Andy Cobb, the handyman and former sweetheart whose family once owned the Winnard Farm before it fell into Tamara's hands. Rekindling their romance, they are caught in the throes of a complicated love story. However, Tamara's world is upended when she meets the brash drummer of the Swipe band, Ben Sergeant, in the midst of a break-up after discovering his girlfriend Fran's infidelity. Tamara and Ben swiftly embark on a passionate love affair, and Ben relocates to Winnard, igniting the excitement of teenage fans Jody Long and her best friend Casey Shaw, who find solace from their mundane village life in Ben's presence. When Ben proposes to Tamara, the pair escape to London for a brief city sojourn. In their absence, the envious Casey, unable to resist her curiosity, infiltrates Tamara's house and sends a deceptive email under Tamara's name. This reckless act sets off a chain of events that will alter the lives of the inhabitants of Ewedown, spiralling towards an inevitable tragedy.
