Plot

In the heart of Marseilles, the world of the humble seamstress Mme. Snow collapses when she breathes her last. Left behind is Henry Scarlett, a bookkeeper entangled in the web of embezzlement from his lace factory employer. With the specter of arrest looming, Henry crafts a daring plan - escape to England, smuggling precious lace as his ticket to a new life. Initially reluctant to involve his daughter Sylvia, he capitulates when she proposes a dramatic twist - to disguise herself as a boy, 'Sylvester,' to trick the authorities. Their journey takes an unexpected turn when they cross paths with the charismatic con artist, Jimmy Monkley. Despite a rocky start marred by deception, they form an unlikely alliance, venturing into the grifting business. When their criminal exploits prove unfruitful, they pivot to a novel venture - transforming into a traveling performance troupe of pierrots, with the inclusion of Maudie Tilt, a naive Cockney maid and Jimmy's confidante. Amidst the whirlwind of their new lives, complex emotions surface. Henry finds himself drawn to Maudie, whilst Sylvia, still disguised as Sylvester, develops feelings for the suave artist, Michael Fane, who they encounter during a performance. As Sylvia grapples with her secret and budding affection for Michael, she must navigate the delicate situation delicately, especially with the refined Russian woman, Lily Levetsky, appearing to be the object of Michael's affections. Immersed in a world of disguise, con artistry, love, and performance, Sylvia Scarlett unfolds as a captivating tale of unexpected alliances, hidden identities, and the elusive path to true love. All the while, the question persists - will anyone discover that the boy 'Sylvester' is, in fact, the girl Sylvia? The dramatic interplay between comedy and drama serves to heighten the intrigue of this unique narrative.
