Plot

In the quaint, unsung town of Texico, New Mexico, a political storm brews at the heart of America's democracy. November 2004 sees the spirited and civically aware fifth-grader Molly Johnson enlightening her classmates about the impending presidential election, sparked by her newfound knowledge of federal politics. Contrasting her enthusiasm is her father, Bud Johnson, a lovable ne'er-do-well, divorced and struggling with alcohol, who has never cast a vote in his life. Molly, in her earnest desire to imbue her father with a sense of civic duty, registers Bud as an Independent voter. Bud, swayed by his daughter's conviction, promises to vote, unknowingly setting the stage for a national spectacle. As the election unfolds, it becomes clear that the decisive swing state of New Mexico will determine whether the Republican incumbent, President Andrew Boone, or his Democratic adversary, Donald Greenleaf, will claim the White House. However, a glitch in the Texico voting booth results in one vote going unregistered - Bud's. An unforeseen twist of fate turns the unassuming Bud into the most sought-after man in America. Bud, in his usual whimsical manner, fails to vote, succumbing instead to his vice. Molly, driven by her father's promise, stealthily slips into the voting booth with his ballot. The revelation of Bud's unregistered vote sends shockwaves across the nation, thanks to the ambitious local news reporter, Kate Madison. As Bud is granted the opportunity to recast his vote in ten days, he and Molly are thrust into the limelight, besieged by the media, the public, and the relentless presidential campaigns. Caught in a circus of political machinations, with the two candidates ready to win at any cost, Bud grapples with the magnitude of his responsibility. Amidst this chaos, Molly strives to help her father make the right choice, while also yearning to present him to the world as a well-meaning individual. As Molly reconnects with her long-absent mother, Larissa Johnson, and builds a unique bond with Kate, she begins to see her wish come true. Amidst the whirlwind of media frenzy and political scrutiny, Swing Vote unravels the power and importance of a single vote, painting an engaging tale of an ordinary man caught in extraordinary circumstances.
