Josie Wilder, a high-powered executive at Best Foot Forward, a New York marketing firm, cherishes her family despite the miles keeping them apart. Her beloved sister Ellie, her best friend, stays rooted in their quaint hometown of New Hope, North Carolina. Josie's work-driven life is abruptly upended when a tragic accident claims Ellie and her husband Aaron, thrusting her into an unexpected role. To the surprise and confusion of their close-knit family, including tech-savvy brother Jeff and parents Pete and Kate Wilder, owners of a local restaurant, Ellie and Aaron posthumously bestow Josie with the guardianship of their two children, the sensitive teen, Ben, and the lively tween, Delilah. The will's stipulation leaves everyone, including Josie herself, questioning Ellie's decision, as Josie's insistent departure from New Hope right after coming of age had created a sense of resentment, especially in their father, Pete. Josie grapples with her new responsibilities and navigates the challenges of her unexpected parenthood. Ben and Delilah, who still love their aunt dearly, often associate her with "the city" and its unfamiliar ways whenever she stumbles in her attempts to comfort them in their grief. Ben, in particular, struggles with his first flush of affection for his classmate, Lily, unsure if his feelings are reciprocated. Amidst this complexity, Josie finds an unexpected ally in Cooper Avchen, her high school heartthrob and Delilah's basketball coach. Having returned to New Hope after his own stint in "the city" - Atlanta, in his case - Cooper becomes a pillar of support for Josie as she unravels the mystery behind Ellie's decision and steps into the shoes of a guardian in their tightknit community.
