Plot

In the poignant drama, 'Surrender, Dorothy,' the sudden tragic demise of Sara Swerdlow in a nocturnal car accident sends shockwaves through her intimate circle of friends, who are spending their summer at a secluded holiday home, a place where Sara found solace and they, camaraderie. The equilibrium of this group is further disrupted when Sara's mother, Natalie, a woman of stringent righteousness, unapologetically inserts herself into the retreat, claiming her daughter's room as her own. Natalie, played by the talented Keaton, journeys into the void left by her daughter, seeking solace in the very space that once housed Sara's dreams and secrets. Her presence, initially met with resistance, becomes a mirror for the group - reflecting their own individual struggles with the past and the present. As they grapple with their memories of Sara, they discover the depth of their ignorance about the woman they thought they knew. The narrative unfolds as Natalie attempts to reconcile with the unfamiliar facets of her 'all-confiding' daughter, revealed through her interactions with Sara's friends. Among them is the gay playwright, Adam, who despite his initial attempts to evict Natalie, finds himself unable to do so due to the forgiving nature of Peter, a happily married man. As the summer progresses, these relationships illuminate the complexities of loss, love, and the human need for connection. 'Surrender, Dorothy' paints a poignant narrative of grief and discovery, as Natalie and her unexpected companions navigate the turbulent waters of loss, confronting their own identities and their understanding of the enigmatic Sara. The film is a compelling exploration of how the absence of a loved one can reveal truths we never knew existed, forcing us to surrender our preconceived notions and embrace the reality of our relationships.
