Sunset Serenade (1942)

In the rustic heart of Bagley Ranch, Vera Martin, a cunning housekeeper in her prime, finds herself on the brink of eviction. She's been ruling the roost since the owner's demise, but the property has been unexpectedly bequeathed to Rodney T. Blackton, the late owner's nephew, shattering Vera's ambitions. As Vera grapples with this blow, neighboring ranch owner, Gregg Jackson, emerges, offering not just condolences but a nefarious scheme to regain control. Jackson's plot is far from benign. He plans to manipulate the river, diverting its life-giving water to his land, thus leaving the rest of the ranchers grappling with drought. His ambitions don't end there. He conspires to rustle the Bagley cattle and counterfeit a $5,000 mortgage on the ranch, aiming to defeat Rodney T. before he can even start. Their arrival coincides with Sylvia Clark's, the appointed guardian of young Rodney T., and they find themselves in the midst of Vera and Jackson's underhanded dealings. Roy's intuition is piqued, and when Sylvia is informed by Jackson of the ranch's desolate state, mortgage due, and missing cattle, Roy and his companions resolve to lend their aid. Their daring endeavors lead to the discovery of the stolen cattle, which Roy manages to sell to government buyer, Clifford Sheldon, obtaining enough funds to wipe out the fabricated mortgage. However, when Sheldon realizes he's purchased the same cattle from Jackson before, the seeds of suspicion are sown, sparking an investigation. Sunset Serenade is a tale of deceit and heroism, with high stakes and even higher tensions, set against the backdrop of the endless prairie.
