Summer Storm (1944)

In the tumultuous year of 1919, deep within Russia's heart, an erstwhile Count known as 'Piggy' Volsky carries a purloined manuscript to Nadena Kalenin, the resolute publisher of the Times. The document, a clandestine theft from his friend Fedor Mikhailovich Petroff, holds untold secrets waiting to be unfurled in print. As Nadena delves into the manuscript, she is transported back to the summer of 1912. The narrative centers around the dashing Petroff, a magistrate in the idyllic summer resort of Chienova, nestled in District Haircker of Imperial Russia. Petroff's betrothed, Nadena, is vacationing in the same locale, her parents being owners of a prominent publishing house. A visit to his friend Volsky's abode introduces Petroff to the strikingly beautiful peasant, Olga Kuzminichna Urbenin, igniting an irresistible passion within him. Olga, betrothed to her fellow peasant Anton Urbenin, is a woman of ambition, keenly aware of her allure and unafraid to use it. She engages in a tantalizing flirtation with Petroff, setting off a chain of events that irrevocably changes their lives. When Nadena stumbles upon Petroff and Olga's clandestine rendezvous, she promptly ends her engagement, leaving Petroff in the throes of heartbreak and confusion. However, Petroff's dismay deepens when he uncovers Olga's duplicitous nature. Not only is she deceiving her husband, but she is also involved in an affair with Volsky. When Olga reveals her intentions to marry Volsky, a cataclysmic tragedy ensues, forever altering the course of their intertwined destinies.
