Plot

In the heart of Canada's sprawling wilderness, a battle of wills and wits ensues in "Stampede" (1936), a Charles Starrett-led Columbia film. Set against the backdrop of the British Quota Law era, this classic narrative is woven by director Ford Beebe and credited to Peter B. Kyne, whose actual involvement remains a mystery. The plot unfolds on the Milford ranch, where owner Milford (LeStrange Millman) is desperately trying to sell a herd of horses to pay off a looming debt held by the ruthless hotelier Brooks (James McGrath). Prospective buyers, though, are scarce and skittish due to the mysterious death of a previous interested party. With the vultures circling, Milford's last hope rests on the shoulders of an outsider, Carson (Arthur McNeil). However, fate deals a cruel hand as Carson is mercilessly murdered on his journey to the ranch, perpetuating the cycle of fear and uncertainty. The villains behind the killing are the henchmen of Stevens (J.P. McGowan), a neighboring rancher with a voracious appetite for Milford's land, using Brooks as his pawn in this deadly game. The plot thickens when Larry Carson (Charles Starret), the slain buyer's brother, arrives at the Milford ranch. He is met by Dale (Finis Barton), Milford's daughter, who warns him of the fate of his brother and the danger that now shadows him. Undeterred, Larry decides to purchase Milford's horses, leading to a daring plan to drive the herd through a perilous narrow pass - a plan that falls into the treacherous hands of Stevens via Milford's own foreman. As Larry's life hangs in the balance, he manages to outwit Stevens' lethal plot to dynamite the herd, even saving one of Stevens' henchmen, who spills the beans about their boss. Armed with the knowledge of Stevens' culpability and the location of the damning evidence concealed in Stevens' safe, Larry must now execute a cunning plan to expose the villain and save the Milford ranch from the clutches of this unscrupulous antagonist. "Stampede" is a riveting tale of bravery, treachery, and the relentless pursuit of justice in the rugged terrain of the Canadian wilderness.
