Plot

In the pulsating heart of a city teetering on the edge of adulthood, seven friends - Alec, Billy, Jules, Kevin, Kirby, Leslie, and Wendy - grapple with the complexities of life after college. As they navigate the labyrinth of fresh careers, budding romances, and newfound independence, the ties of their friendship are tested, twisted, and tangled. Alec, a political aspirant with a chameleon-like adaptability, switches his loyalty from Democrat to Republican, unsettling his girlfriend Leslie. As a rising architect, Leslie craves independence and self-discovery before surrendering to marital commitments, despite living with Alec in a shared dance of love and uncertainty. Kirby, a waiter at their beloved local haunt, St. Elmo's bar, dreams of law school. He finds himself enamored with an older woman, Dale Biberman, a former college acquaintance now a doctor. His desperation to impress her paints a stark contrast to his roommate, Kevin, a struggling writer whose cynicism towards love sparks rumors about his feelings for Alec. Billy, the epitome of reckless abandon, clings to his fraternity glory days, shunning adult responsibilities. His marriage and fatherhood are mere footnotes in the book of his life, filled instead with casual flings and soulful saxophone sessions. Wendy, sheltered and naive, hails from affluence but works in a low-paying social services job. Her unrequited love for Billy is as heartbreaking as Jules's struggle to maintain a lifestyle of extravagance beyond her financial means. As they each grapple with life's relentless onslaught of decisions and dilemmas, the question looms large - will the bonds of their friendship weather the storm of adulthood or will they crumble under the weight of their individual trials? St. Elmo's Fire is a compelling tale of friendship, love, and the tumultuous transition from college life to the realities of the adult world.
