Plot

In the sun-drenched world of Venice, California, the narratives of street-toughened teenagers Kelley Tanner and Jonas Trumball unfold. Dispossessed, they call the beach their home, their days consumed by a whirlwind of drugs, alcohol, and petty thefts, all survival mechanisms in their harsh reality. One fateful day, Jonas stumbles upon a conversation between a wealthy woman, Evelyn, and her housekeeper, revealing her family's impending one-month vacation and their home’s security alarm code. Seizing this golden opportunity, Jonas persuades Kelley to join him in what he envisions as their ticket to a fresh start in Mexico. While Jonas focuses on the tangible spoils, Kelley, orphaned by the foster system, finds herself entranced by the warmth of familial love captured in the family's home videos. She becomes deeply connected with the family, particularly their son Michael, who shares her admiration for the classic film, "The Kid". However, their illicit idyll is shattered when the family unexpectedly returns, forcing Kelley and Jonas to abandon their stolen sanctuary. Lost and desperate, Kelley stumbles upon a movie theater screening her beloved Chaplin film. As destiny would have it, she crosses paths with Michael inside the nearly empty theater. A connection sparks between them, leading to a blossoming romance that becomes increasingly complicated as Kelley struggles to keep her past hidden. However, as the echoes of her actions start to haunt her, she realizes that secrets, like squatters, can only occupy a space for so long before they are exposed.
